Looking for Alaska
Looking for Alaska tell the story of sixteen-year-old Miles "Pudge" Halter, an introverted high school student who’s known for memorizing the last words
of famous people. Bored of his life in Florida, Miles asks his parents to allow
him to attend Culver Creek, where he makes friends, like Chip, "The Colonel", who
don’t exactly influence him in a positive way, but Pudge appreciates the fact
that he’s making friends for probably the first time in his life. Pudge falls
in love with the energetic and humorous, Alaska Young. One night, when Alaska
is drunk, she makes out with Pudge. Then, runs away, crying, for an unknown
reason. The next morning, Miles and his friends are informed that she’s been in
a car accident and has passed away. Devasted, and feeling guilty for her death,
Pudge and the Colonel try to understand the circumstances of Alaska's death.
Looking for Alaska, was, without a doubt, one of my favorite books ever. The fact that the novel was written from the Pudge's point of view allow the reader to fully engage with his character, and view things through his perspective. It teaches us that the only way to escape the labyrinth of suffering is to forgive, and that we don't have to know what our dreams are to make them come true, that's what "The Great Perhaps" is all about.
One of my favorite quotes from the novel was : “Imagining the future is a kind of nostalgia.”
There's a deep meaning behind his words, imagining the future is a sort of escape from reality, we waste or time thinking about how successful we'll be in the future, but we never really do anything to fulfill those dreams.
